The Switch is Shin Lim's take on the open prediction effect. In his version, a folded card is placed on the table in the beginning of the effect. A card is then selected, signed and shuffled into the deck. With a riffle of the deck, the folded card becomes the spectator's signed card. The switch itself is very, very clean. However, the trailer was faked. Jeff Stone has a fantastic review of this product and goes over in detail the faking of the trailer (http://magicreviewed.com/reviews/review-switch-shin-lim/) I will leave it up to him to talk about that as he is very well versed on the subject.
The gimmick is very small, lightweight and can fit into your wallet easily. It takes about 3-4 minutes to make. You receive supplies to make one gimmick. If your gimmick gets torn over time or you want to use a different back design, you can take out the supplies and make a new one. The gimmick itself should be very good quality (depending on your arts and crafts skills)
The actual routine itself is very easy when it comes to doing the switch. I am lucky enough to have a pretty good MCF so it is fairly easy for me. But I can see where people could get worried. Mr Lim does go over other alternatives to performing a MCF but none of them are as impactful as the featured routine on the demo. All the alternatives consist of folding the card in front of the spectators, this can really dull the impact of the final reveal, in my opinion. He does teach a few nice vanishes of the selected card, but it still isn't enough.
The DVD was very bad. The teaching was horrible and very erratic. He was always talking about what he will "get onto later" or "I'll teach you that next". It was incredibly annoying and unscripted. To make matters worse, there was loud background music which made it very hard to hear what he was saying. The DVD wasn't very well shot either. There was him sitting on a stool with a TV next to him as a close up. It was very hard to see what was going on.
The switch is very easy to do, when you are in position to do it. He teaches different places and ways to switch the card (from under a spectator's hand, on a cell phone, in an envelope) But really what you are buying here, isn't a routine, but a way to switch a card. It may be difficult but in essence, that's what the DVD is about.
Overall, I personally won't be using this because even though I can perform the effect to a decent standard, I don't think I will be able to perform it flawlessly every time (which is what you need). Also it is a very strong effect which, when perfuming for teenagers as a teenager, you need strong, impossible seeming magic. Good idea, good gimmick, bad trailer, bad teaching and semi-bad accompanying routine, I am giving this a 5 and a half out of 10.
