Pasteboard is the first instalment in the SansMinds Worker Series. You get five effects using a deck of cards. I assume future instalments in this series will use other objects (perhaps coins or rubber bands) but that's just an assumption. I will go over each effect in this DVD:
Tap Change: a visual colour change that happens in the spectators hands. This change is quick, easy to do and visual as hell. This was my favourite move on the project, as it makes the colour change interactive and is done in their hands which is awesome. It will take a little bit of time to practice and get down one "move" in this change but it's nothing too hard.
Tear - a transpo where two cards are signed and torn. You switch the corners, and the cards switch too. It requires a bit of a set up, which I think was too much of a hassle for just one effect like this. This is a nice routine and I can see its place, but I still think that French Kiss by Wayne Houchin is THE best signed two card transpo, IMHO.
Take - this is so visual! I love this! You visually remove a heart from a different card and throw it onto the "wrong" selection, making it correct. This would work best on video or projector for a large audience, however it can be done close up. It requires a bit of set up on the deck and a gimmick, but is very powerful and is a special routine which shouldn't be performed often, in my opinion as it will lessen the impact the more you perform it. I really like this routine and I am considering putting this into my show, with music.
Mouth - card to mouth style routine, instead you place a joker in your mouth before hand, the spectator selects a card and loses it in the deck, you try to make the card jump to the top of the deck but the joker ends up on top, they look up - and their card is in your mouth. Nice variation on the card to mouth effect, nothing too new, but I thought this was really nice. The method is simple and easy to do, the only new move added to the classic card to mouth routine is really easy to execute but will take practice to get smooth.
Move - a moving ink effect. You can join two hearts together, out a narrow through a heart, move a dot from one side to the other, etc. This uses a simple gimmicked card which can be added to your deck at any time. The spectator can keep the signed and altered card too :) this is surprisingly practical if you keep the gimmick in the cellophane of the box and pull it out when you are ready to perform Move. I really enjoyed this effect.
Pasteboard is a good project, some effects were better than others but my aim when I watch multi effect DVDs is to find 1-3 effects I will use. I really enjoyed the Tap Change, Move and Take, and I will be considering adding them into my regular repertoire. The DVD was very well produced and Jason Yu teaches all the routines really well and you learn everything you need to know. If you like the sound of the routines taught, pick this up and you shouldn't be disappointed. 8.5/10
