Ekaterina, if you didn't know, is a female magician taking the world by storm. She is well known for her incredible cardistry performances, and recently, for her magic and appearance on Wizard Wars. She joined the Murphy's team At The Table for an amazing 3 hour lecture on magic and cardistry. I really enjoyed this lecture because it was different to what I expect usually from this lecture series. This lecture focused on something other than magic tricks (like Mark Elsdon did with the mentalism lecture), Ekaterina spent over an hour teaching the basics and more advanced moves in cardistry. She covered basic one handed cuts, twirls, fans, etc. and moved onto her more complicated flourishes (especially her Russian pyramid). She also taught some magic in this lecture:
Layers concept - on Wizard Wars, Ekaterina performed an effect for Penn and Teller which fooled the crap out of me (and thousands of other magicians and people worldwide). In that effect, Penn signed a card, she made the signature vanish, and she split the card - revealing the signature has melted through and was printed onto the second layer. During this lecture, Ekaterina performed this effect, but teaches a different version with a different method. In her "layers concept" you can make a caricature of someone you are working for, a company logo, someone's star-sign or birthday, anything you want appear inside their card (revealed through splitting the card). Watch the lecture demo for what I mean. She gave an in depth explanation of this concept and gave a masterclass on card splitting too.
Rope escape - a short and rather nice rope escape was taught in which a participant ties your hands behind your back with a rope (as tight as they want), yet you are able to free yourself in under 5 seconds. I tried this out and it works very well.
I really enjoyed this lecture. Ekaterina is a brilliant performer and she really delivered with this lecture. I enjoyed the cardistry workshop and I got quite a bit out of it, as I dabble in cardistry. Very fun, I had a blast watching this At The Table experience. Tune in next week for Nathan Kranzo :)
