Canic by Nicholas Lawrence is an effect where you take a can, rip the tab off and visually put it back on - in the spectators hands.
The method for this effect is really clever. I made the gimmicked can up and it works really well. You receive some of the supplies necessary in the DVD case, in order to make up the gimmick. This is great piece of situational magic that would work brilliantly in a group situation with friends.
The DVD is really well produced and Herman from SansMinds covers everything you need to know in order to perform this effect. No sound, lighting or production issues here. In the case, you get some of the materials required to make the gimmicked can.
The actual gimmick is fairly simple to make, will take 5 - 7 minutes, and should last you a long time. This construction is covered on the DVD in detail. You will need a few things to construct the gimmick (eg. cans, scissors, super glue, etc.) which you can pick up from any service station or craft store. The gimmick at the end of the effect is examinable but not completely clean, so to speak. However, it can be freely handled by the spectator and examined, and they will not find anything.
Here is the problem - the effect and method for Canic is great! But they claim that Canic is an "organic miracle with a BORROWED soda can", on the trailer they highlight "borrow any can" and on the back of the DVD case, the only text is "borrow any can". The main handling uses a gaffed can which cannot be borrowed. You need to either introduce the gimmicked can OR pl*nt the gimmicked can somewhere and bring attention to it. You are taught an "impromptu" handling, where you can borrow the can, however it still uses a gimmick that you need to carry with you in your wallet or in your pocket. This handling for Canic is great, and you can grab a can off someone and perform the effect. You do have to handle the can a little differently at the beginning of the effect however, but this isn't really an issue in my eyes. So they redeemed themselves with this second handling however they should change the "borrowed can" claim in the ad copy and make it a little more specific.
Other than the ad copy controversy, the actual effect is really good. The visual is great and the can is completely examinable by the spectator at the end. I really liked this effect and I will be using the second handling and will keep the gaff in my wallet so I am always ready to perform. 7/10
