Sigh.... I am going to feel bad writing this review but here goes:
Unboxing by Nicholas Lawrence is an effect in which the card box vanishes visually leaving only the deck of cards. Simple (so I thought). I love these types of quick and visual effects. Upon watching the trailer, I had the method sussed pretty quickly. I was excited to get a hold of a copy of this and play with the gimmick. (more on that in a second). I, sad to say, was very disappointed with this.
Firstly, you don't receive a gimmick in the DVD but rather supplies to construct your own. Not a big deal, I personally love making my gimmicks. It gives me a better understanding on the way it works. I would say I am very good at constructing gimmicks but this time - I felt like an amateur. Seriously, this was hard. Without giving too much away, I have worked with this "material" before and I know it is tricky, but this was near impossible. On the DVD, there is no verbal instruction for the gimmick construction, just pop up text and music. This made the process very difficult and this gimmick really will take you up to an hour to make. My gimmick worked after making it and should last a while, but I can see how some people can mess up while constructing it. Also, you only receive supplies in the DVD for one gimmick, so if you screw up or want to make another one, you will need to buy more "stuff".
When the gimmick is made up, it works pretty well. The concept behind this is great. The gimmick is 1-2 cards thick and can be stolen out really easily. The disappearance of the card box looks really nice and you can do many variations of it. My favourite is simply dropping the deck and having the box vanish. The gimmick should last a long time, but when it does break...... you are stuck making another one.
On another note, the DVD is very well produced. The teaching of the routine by Herman was excellent. No problems here regarding audio or production quality.
Nicholas Lawrence is a friend of mine and a very talented creator. I have loved all of his releases with SansMinds. This one - being completely honest - was a brilliant idea that should have come complete in the box. If it came with a complete gimmick, although I realise it would raise the price dramatically, would make me and so many other people happier with their purchase. However, if you don't mind an arts and crafts project and really like the effect, then I would say take a chance. IT is a really workable effect with an awesome method - you just need to put the effort in to construct it. 6.5/10
