Something Out of The Ordinary by Nicholas Lawrence is a collection of visual magic effects using ordinary objects. These effects range from impromptu to slightly prepared to heavily gaffed, so there is something for every situation. Here are the effects taught:
X-Move - moving ink effect using a deck of cards and your hand. You draw an "x" on their signed card, the "x" visually jumps to your hand, then back to the card, then back again to your hand. The method is an interesting use for an old gimmick and the gaff can hide in your deck, and can be brought into play when ready to perform. The gimmick has to be made by you, however the materials needed to construct it is provided in the DVD. The gimmick is slightly fragile, so you will need to take care of it. However, when I played with this, I really honestly enjoyed it. It is really visual and smile, and you can leave them with a signed card at the end, which is always nice.
Folder - an incorrect folded prediction visually changes to match the spectators selected card. The gimmick is simple to make, and can be placed into your wallet to be performed whenever. The change is easy to execute and you can give them the folded card to examine afterwards. I have already made one of these gaffs and placed it in my wallet, because this really is a powerful effect that gives a prediction a visual element. I loved this effect.
Live Band - a simple, visual and easy to execute rubber band colour change. This is gimmick-less and requires no special gaffed rubber bands. This would be great to use before Crazy Man's Handcuffs, to say "let's make these bands different, so that you can see exactly what is about to happen", then execute the change. Really great idea :)
Cigarette - in this effect, a cigarette visually gets pushed into your eye and pulled back out. You need to make a gaffed cigarette, which was a pain to make. I took me a while to get all the materials together and construct the gaff. The gimmick works, but it just don't really see a reason to perform this effect, other than to freak someone out for the sake of it, which personally isn't my style. However, if that's what your into, that's totally cool. It's a matter of taste with this effect, the visual is good, the gimmick works, just would you perform it? It would, however, go into a cigarette manipulation routine really well. I perform Justin Miller's Smoking For Two a lot, so I might add this into that routine. If you have a use for it, then it's a good addition to your routine.
Monte Matches - a matchbook transpo routine. One spectator holds a full matchbook in their hand, you hold a matchbook with one match, and they visually switch. At first, I didn't really like the method for this. However, I made the gaff up, and it is really good! The change looks insane in real life, the matches just appear from nowhere. Even though I know the method, it still fools me practicing. The gaff takes a little time to construct but will last you for ages when it is made. You recieve some of the supplies needed for this effect, however you will need to supplies your own matchbooks. I will be carrying this in my wallet so it is ready any time. This is my favourite effect on the DVD.
Refresh - a visual effect where a piece of gum's wrapper visually vanishes with a wave of the hand. This is simple and requires almost no preparation. This stick of gum can be placed in the gum pack, and you can perform any time. The vanish is simple to execute and looks really good. Not much to day about this, other than it works and it is a great effect.
Stir - a visual effect in which a stirring stick through bill. This is ridiculously visual and deceptive. You have to make a simple gimmick, it takes almost no time to construct and you can have it on you at all times. The bill is completely ungimmicked and can be borrowed, signed and handed back to the spectator. The method is incredible simple yet effective, and I will be using this regularly.
This DVD was really well produced and Nicholas Lawrence teaches everything really well. You receive the supplies for some of the gimmicks you will need to construct.
What's great about this DVD (as with other multi-effect projects) is that you have a bunch of effects taught, so you can pick one or two (or all of them) that you will perform. Something Out of The Ordinary gives you seven visual effects with everyday objects, and I know you will find something on this project to fit your performing style which you can add to your arsenal today. 10/10
