Mike Hankins delivered a great lecture for the At The Table experience series. The hilarious former host of the series shared his routines, effects and thoughts on magic. Hosted by Chris Oberle, the lecture had a really relaxed feel and Mike's teaching style was in depth and refreshing. Here are a few of my favourite things covered:
Coin in bottle (impromptu) - Mike shares his coin in bottle effect that is very clean and can be done without any special or expensive gimmicks. This is cool because you can very fairly show there is nothing in the bottle, and once the coin goes through, you can hand it straight out. There are no holes, slits, magnets, etc. This will work with a lot of bottles, but not with all. I can't say much without tipping method but it shouldn't be too hard to source the correct type of bottle. I really liked this idea and will be trying this out.
Cannibal Cards - Mike's brilliant presentation for the Cannibal Cards plot. The four "cannibal" Kings eat a few cards, get placed in separate parts of the deck (their prison cells) and escape to the bottom of the deck. But what makes these "cannibal cards" so easy to catch is because they are covered in blood (AKA the back changes to a red design). This needs a small set up on the deck, but nothing too harsh. I really loved this routine. This is also available as an instant download on Theory11, but he teaches the routine here.
Sleights:
Snap Change - Mike gives his tips and routines for the snap change. He teaches around 6 or so versions of the snap change. He also teaches his move where the card changes twice. Really awesome workshop on this classic, visual move.
Slider Double - Mike's knacky but awesome method for sliding a double across a table without it splitting. This isn't difficult, just takes a little practice and experimentation on different surfaces.
KM Move variation - he taught a lovely variation on the KM move (taught on his download 3DM). This is really cool and he teaches an awesome routine to do utilising this move.
Mike really went all out on this lecture. He taught a plethora of awesome card routines, quite a few sleights, gives his theory on performing, a coin in bottle effect and explains his effect Illumin8. He shared a way to never get told "no" again whilst working resteraunts, this is really clever. I really enjoyed this lecture and I highly recommend picking it up. 9/10
