So At The Table has now become a fortnightly lecture series instead of weekly. Good thing or a bad thing? I think it's great! Firstly, the price per month has dropped from $50.... to $9.95. So two lectures per month for ten dollars, in my opinion, is one of the best deals in magic - just before Reel Magic. This month kicked off with a bang, starting with Kyle Marlett - superstar magic creator, consultant and... nerd :P I have loved Kyle's stuff for the longest time and it was really refreshing to watch this and learn heaps of his unreleased material. A few effects were from past releases, eg. The Weekly, Penguin Live or the 702 Project, however the majority were brand new. Here are a few of my favourite effects taught on this lecture:
Drawing Straws - a visual effect using a large notepad. You draw a cup with a straw in it, and visually pluck the straw out of the drawing. Quick and visual, which I love. The gaff isn't too hard to make. He shows where everything goes and how it goes together, he doesn't construct it from scratch, but it is pretty simple. When I make mine, I will update this part of the review. However, this is really clever and looks great!
Vanishing Banana - taught on the Weekly, performed by Cyril. This is reminiscent of the SansMind's Vanishing Pen effect, except with a banana. You tear a banana off of a bunch, place it in a bag, and crumple it up as the banana vanishes. The set up takes ten seconds and can be done on the fly - at a friend's house, a party etc.
Bill to toilet paper - a signed bill vanishes and reappears inside a roll of toilet paper a spectator is holding. This can be done close up or on stage. Stage is preferable. as Kyle suggests making a kid run from one end of the theatre to the other unrolling the toilet paper that is being held on stage :P This concept can also be used with cards, coins, any thin object really. I loved this and I will be using this!
Bottle Through Body - this was taught on his Penguin Lecture, but this is so good! This is great, you push a bottle right through a spectators body. It is great and the method is super simple too. This can play to huge audiences, and you need is a bottle and a prepped bag. It is great, and I plan on adding it into my parlour show.
So many more effects were taught too, so don't just take those as all the effects. He taught some mentalism, some coffee shop magic, close up, etc
This was a great lecture! I thoroughly enjoyed it! He taught around 20 effects in this lecture, some you may like, some you may not, but there was definately a lot of variety. Kyle taught some close up, some parlour, even some stage routines that could play for a huge theatre/arena. Hosted by Greg Wilson, the lecture was fun, informative and a massive jam session! Definately worth your time! 9/10
